In San Diego, I stumbled across a new trend in dog treats … dehydrated sweet potatoes. I thought they were chicken chews (another trend). When I picked one up, it was thick, heavy, hard like jerky, and wrinkled. The manufacturer told me it was a sweet potato. How cool is this?
Yams are packed with vitamins and minerals, calcium and fiber. They're naturally sweet and great for dogs who want a vegetarian alternative to rawhide. They're also good for dogs with wheat or corn allergies. Sweet potato chews can be kept for six months (longer if you refrigerate them).
I was so impressed with these chews that I decided we should carry them on FunStuffForDogs.com. I've ordered a couple of cases that come in resealable plastic bags. We need to get our crack-shot photographer, Dianne Coburn, to take some fabulous pictures so you can see the texture and color online. We should have them up and ready to buy in a week or so.

I saw these at our local pet “health food store” and of course had to try them. My Boxer LOVES them. My sister’s Boxer ate a piece and left the rest. I would not compare it to chewing on rawhide. This lasts longer than a biscuit, but is still gone in minute or two. I would buy them again for variety of flavor and texture.

SWEET POTATO CHEWS FOR DOGS
(Always Use Organic When You Can)
Wash a sweet potato (yam) the really orange variety, and cut down the middle
lengthwise.
Then cut long lengthwise slices about 1/3 of an inch wide and place them in a single layer on a cookie sheet.
Put in the oven at 250 degrees for about 3 hours. This leaves them kind of chewy but you could also bake them a little longer to get them crunchy.

are the sweet potato peels toxic or not? I am hearing they might be. I have been feeding my dogs the sweet potato skins for a long time and nothing has happened, but I will stop if I find out they are bad.

make sure to never let your dog have or get to raw potato skins, they have a toxin in them called SOLANINE which is very harmful and can be fatal to dogs. It affect their neurological system. Some dogs may be okay, but you don’t want to take the risk.

There’s a great group called Bark for Peace that makes Sweet Potato Jerky that has other ingredients in it, they are organic, all natural, and the group is really focued on eco-friendly and really cool people. You can find them on myspace. And the treats are awesome! I can’t get my boyfriend to stop eating them.

Whenever I’d make myself a sweet potato, it got to the point where I had to bake TWO because my Havanese would eat almost all of mine…. THEN, I was in a Dollar Store and saw Sweet Potato/Beef twisted doggie treat (though still expensive, even at a Dollar Store). But, I bought a small pack just to see what he’d do. He ate it like steak! I have a dehydrator, so I am going to try and make my own. I just don’t know if you cook and add anything to them before dehydrating…. Trial and error, I suppose. So much better for him than those awful dog treats with additives in them.

My dogs absolutely LOVE these things!!! They run to the pantry every time i go in the kitchen. I have my girls on a raw diet, so these treats are a perfect addition. Processed treats and food are SOOOOOO bad for our four legged friends, and i am just happy that SOMEONE is thinking of their health and wellness.

My little puppy absolutely LOVES the sweet potato treats…when I put it up against a pig ear for her to choose, she gos for the sweet potato… I have a dehydrator so I am going to experiment with making some…so long to pig ears, hello sweet potato!!

I finally harvested my home grown sweet potatos in mid December (south central Texas here). After a thorough washing it is too cool this time of year to cure properly outside so I spread them on an old beach towel in a corner on the floor to cure in my dining room. This included a lot of half inch to one inch diameter tubers to use start again in February. Next day I find several of them all chewed up in the dining room and in the spare bedroom. I thought mice or rats had found a way into the house. So I plant traps all over. Next day wife comes to me and says come look at this… My 5 year old basset-hound “Roxie” was nosing around through the thin tubers, finally selected a couple and ran off to the spare room and started munching away. I looked in her hiding places for treats and toys and found several more she had stashed away for later.

I don’t even bother to bake them. All 6 of my dogs love sweet potatoes straight up. I just cut a slice off and hand it to them. They run in all directions to gobble them up so no one else will steal them 🙂

I have a big and small dogs. And I was in Menards Hardware Store in the pet department. And they have sweet potatoes with a piece of bacon dried and wrapped around it. I thought they were chews. When I got home and looked at them, I realized what they were. AND MY DOGS “LOVE THEM”! They are $10 a bag and on sale for $4.99. Great price!
