I was at a dinner party last year and we got to talking about our dogs. A couple started talking about the songs they sing to their dogs. They even gave us a tast of the little theme songs they have for when their dogs get a ride in the car or have dinner. I almost fell over, because my husband and I do that, too. I thought we were the only ones (and kudos for that brave couple for bringing it up, because I never would have mentioned it).
Here’s a totally unsolicited sampler of the songs we sing to our dogs:
- (To the tune of “Flipper”) – “They called him Raleigh, Raleigh, Raleigh the collie. No one could be, fluffy as he …. “
- (To the tune of “I Want Candy”) – “I want kibble”
- (At mealtime, to the Christmas carol tune) – “It’s the most wonderful time of the day!”
- (From The Donner Party’s song, adopted by Home Grocer.com) – “Would you like to have something to eat? Would you like to have biscuits and meat?” (Drives ’em crazy at mealtime.)
- I used to sing to my dachshund, “I’m a little Dachshund, short and stout. Here is my tail and here is my snout.”
I think this is much more prevalent than previously realized. We’re all just (understandably) reluctant to talk about it. But I’m totally intrigued by this. So help me out. What songs do you sing to your dog when you go for a ride, or go to the dog park, or get ready for bed?

For my dog Zacchaeus, I sing him the Sunday School song, “Zacchaeus was a wee little man, a wee little man was he…” He just watches me like I am crazy. Now my little TFT Esther, if I try to sing anything at all, she attacks me (all 9 pounds) and tries to lick me to death, guess she is telling me to not try singing for a living!

When I clean the house I put on a CD and sing along while I’m cleaning. My two babies, a yellow lab and a pit bull, love to follow me and dance around to the music. I sing to them and they try to join in, yapping and bouncing around. They seem to prefer Island music like Steel Drum Bands and Regge but also like anything upbeat. They don’t care much for heavy metal or rap. They run for the door and want to go outside. I guess everyone’s a critic!

I sing “If I Only Had a Brain” to our Boxer Caesar. He’s a smart and intuitive dog but he doesn’t look smart, in fact he comes across as a little dopey, maybe because his head is the size of a cinderblock and his face seems to have a little more skin than he needs, but that’s what I sing to him and he loves it. I usually tap him on the head for the “if I only had a brain” part and then he lets me chase him around the house.

My little brown chihuahua’s name is Macho Man. So I sing “Macho Macho Man…I’ve got to be a Macho Man” every day to him. When other people hear that his name is Macho Man they sing the song to him too. He Loves it!!!!

I also make up little nonsense songs, and sing them to my Siberian Husky named Lucy. Sometimes, she just looks at me like I’m nuts. Other times, if I start howling, I can get her to start howling, and then she “sings” to me. At the dog park, she is THE doggie diva! It’s her answer to all those dogs who bark incessantly.

Oh, yeah, I got lots of them. Although my cats seem to appreciate them more. But for my sweet mixed breed dog “Clara” I love to sing to her the tune of Barry Manilow’s “Copa Cabana” Example: “…her name was Clara, she was a show dog…”
She just looks at me like I am completely crazy, and she is right!
But she likes to see me enjoy myself!

Well, I don’t have a permanent song for my greyhound pup yet since I’m still trying to figure her out, but I did have a great song that I always sung to my cat of 23 years. Michelle, by The Beatles, with a change of words saying: Marbel, my belle, these are things that go together well, me and Marbel……She would always start talking to me when I sang it!

I thought this was so funny when a friend passed along this website. My dog MONTE is my everything. He is 8 years old and still acts like he is 3.
I sing “You are my Sunshine” to him every day and when I sing this song to him he gets so lovey dovey wagging his tale and moves in for his big hug.
When we come back from walking in the rain I sing “This is the way we dry him up dry him up dry him up” well he loves being dried I swear it’s the best part for him after walking or going swimming”
Then when we decide on big day going for an off leash jaunt we have our own little song called “lets go doggy parkn’ lets go doggy parkn'” he knows exactly what I am talking about and gets really excited jumping up and down” 🙂

I have had a service dog for around 12 years now, and I am on number three. I have given each of them a song. My first dog Fremont, who passed away after only having her six months (cancer) was “I will always love you” by Whitney Houston. My second dog, Glenda, was “The Wiond Beneath My Wings”, by Bette Midler, she passed just two years ago due to old age. I have had Allie for five years and I still havent decided on hers.

I’m so happy I’m not the only one who sings to my dogs! For my Golden Retriever/Samoyed mix, named Molly, I do my own version of Annie’s “The sun will come up…for Molly, bet your bottom dollar that for Molly…” and my mini Dachshund named Moondoggie, I sing “It’s a marvelous night for a Moondog”. They both look at me like I’ve lost my mind…and at times will get up and leave the room…but that’s ok…I still sing it loud!!

FIrst, his full name is ‘Livin On Love’ Jackson Boy’, Jackson for short after Alan Jackson, my fav country singer….Livin On Love, my fav song…which of course I sing to him…as well as other AJ songs…..
I sing the theme song to the Courtship of Eddie’s Father bc he’s my best friend….anyone remember that show? I did change a couple words to suit a dog….

When my dog Cole is sleeping in my lap I will grab his long cocker spaniel ears and sing Cole’s ears hang low and they wobble to and fro, I can tie them in a knot, I can tie them in a bow, I can throw’em over his shloulders like a continental soldier. The love of my life is my black and white Teacup Shih Tzu, Princess Rose, who will be 2yrs this March 26. When I first brought her home at the age of 8 weeks, she hated having a bath. I would make it as much of a fun activity as possible using her favourite squeeky toys and treats but still she hated having a bath. By accident I started singing to her, “The Rubber Ducky Song”, from Seaseme Street that Ernie sings with his Rubber Ducky.

Our first poodle a black toy, named Lucy who went to Rainbow Bridge 3 years ago, absolutely hated me singing to her. Whenever I would serenade her with a song she would howl loudly then begin licking my face all over and then lick frantically over my mouth. I think it was her way to shut me up so she wouldnt have to listen to my singing lol.!

Most of the songs I sing to my Jack Russell Cinnamon Sugar are made-up, but they all have her name in them. When she is with her cousin Nikki, a miniature poodle, I sing “yipee ki yi yo–get along, little doggies!” She always seems to love it and I think it’s great that so many other people sing to their dogs, too!

I’m suprised to see how many people sing, “You are my Sunshine” to their dogs. I do it too. I also sing, “You are so Beautiful…to Me” and “Mommy’s Little Baby loves Shortening Bread”. On a funnier note, my husband caught me humming the theme song to “Star Trek: Voyager” to our Boxer. I didn’t even realize I was doing it! It was hilarious.

My husband started singing a modified version of James Blunt’s You’re Beautiful to our iggy Trixie. He always had it stuck in his head so he just modified it a bit. He sings, “You’re beautiful, you’re beautiful, you’re beautiful to me. I saw your face in the puppy place, and I knew it had to be, and I’m so in love with you.” Of course you have to imagine a grown man holding a 9lb dog on his chest and singing in a really high pitched voice. She only likes it when he does it and when he’s actually singing her whole body wiggles and she tries to give kisses and then in between verses she just sits. She only likes it when I sing to her if I sing along with the radio. Loves Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville!

When my 4 come in from outside, I keep them gated in the “mudroom” until I get to wipe all their feet off, especially during mud season here in Vermont. (It’s always something–either mud, or snow, or leaves, or sand …)
To keep them interested while I’m toweling off their brothers’ feet, I sometimes sing to the tune of the old elementary school song whose name I can’t remember, but it goes “This is the way we wash our hands, wash our hands, wash our hands, EAR-LYE in the mornin’ …”
But I sing “This is the way we wipe our feets,
wipe our feets,
wipe our feets;
this is the way we wipe our feets,
so daddy doesn’t hate us.” 🙂

I sing a cadence to them when it’s time to go upstairs, “Hup 2,3,4…Hup 2,3,4… Up the stairs, Here we go, Hup 2,3,4.” They get dancy and run up the stairs.
My husband sings the Casper the friendly ghost song to our Boxer boy…”Booker the friendly dog. The friendliest dog I know”. He follows with other nonsense!
Lindy, our Boxer girl gets the Cinderella song that the mice sing, “Linderelly, Linderelly…”

Glad that I’m not a freak (or if I am one, I at least have plenty of company.) My “fox red” Labrador Retriever pup, Argos (Argie), has a face that literally stops traffic — he’s so beautiful, people in cars pull over to ask me about him. He’s got the most intelligent and friendly eyes I’ve ever seen in either dog or human. However, when he’s fully alert, he moves his ears forward and his broad brow becomes wrinkled giving him a deceptively worried look. It took me months to get over feeling apprehensive whenever he gives me that look. One of the ways I got over it was to sing to him a borrowed song from Man of La Mancha, replacing “Knight” with “Dog”:
Hail Dog of the Woeful Contenance!

Although my singing voice is less pleasant than a hyena’s, Argie would excitedly wag his otter tail and pull his face back into a happy grin whenever I’d sing him his song.

(BTW, at 13 months, he’s well on his way to winning titles in Rally, Obedience, Agility and Tracking and “making golden history.” Though badly off key, that singing clearly has worked 🙂

My mother and younger sister, and I do as well when I’m home to see them, sing to and for Ellie the yellow lab almost non-stop. “Don’t Cha” by the PussyCat Dolls has been modified to go, “Don’t Cha wish your doggie was hot like me” and the song “Carwash” has been changed to “Dogwash” amongst a hundred other songs that get butchered daily with new lyrics to adore the dog with.
Our 15-year old Sheltie that passed a few years ago likewise had many songs sang about him, including one my older made up from scratch entirely just to get him to start howling. He would go on howling for several minutes after someone had stopped singing and would expect much praise and kisses for his taking over the solo performance.

Aw! This is awesome! My entire family sings to our dogs. My dad sings who let the dogs out to our dogs on a regular basis, my borther sings “My Humps” to is bichon/maltese mix, and I sing any song thats n the radio to my long-haired chihuahua pup cause she just loves when you sing to her! She gets so excited and starts wagging her and kissing my face!

About two days ago i found a yellow lab retreiver in my yard. His tag said argos and i tried to contact the number on the tag but no one answered. Through some searching i found out the number was from Great Falls, Montana. I was looking on the internet for a yellow lab named argos and i came upon this site….i read the post from “argies dad” and i was wondering if this happened to be his dog because he seems to fit the description completely.i never called him argie but after reading the post i look at him and said argie and he immediately came to me. if you could please contact “argies dad” and ask if hes lost his dog i would be very grateful. if he has lost the dog then you have my permmission to give him my email address and have him contact me. thank you

I’m probably one of the worst offenders when it comes to singing to my dog. I sing a version of Copacabana to him that goes “His name is Draven, He is a Poodle, With streaks of gray shot through his hair, And his ears cut up to there, He knows the down-stay, And the high-five, He will play dead on command, And then come alive again”. I also have a song about Provolone cheese set to the tune of Enrique Iglesias’ “Bailamos”. Provolone is his favorite cheese and when we sing that, he knows he’s getting some and gets very excited.

My dad started singing to my dog when she was a pup- I caught on too. Shes now 7 years old, and she still loves to hear us sing to her.
Sang to Oscar Meyer Weiner song:
“My puppy has a first name it M-i-s-s-y, My puppy has a second name its S-i-l-l-y. I love my puppy every day and if you ask me why I’ll say- Because Missy Silly has a way with P-l-a-y that spells play.”
Theres also the infamous “Yankee Doodle Dandy” song:

During relaxing cudlle time, I sing my dog Jake the Pirates of the Mississippi song ‘Feed Jake, he’s been a good dog, my best friend, right through it all. If I die before I wake….feed Jake.” Before I even had a dog, that song made me cry because it was so sweet. When I was getting ready to adopt a dog and found this sweet, sweet fella named Jake, I fell in love forever.
When I come home from work or when we are gearing up to play, I like to sing Kool & The Gang’s Shake your Booty, only it’s Jake Your Booty for us.
I never thought of You Are My Sunshine, but I’m gonna give that one a try too.

To our minpin/dachsund mix, Dixie (to the tune of the old TV show, Davy Crockett) “Dixie, Dixie Doodle, Queen of the Wild Frontiers”….and when I draw out the “ee” sounds she’ll join me in song!
To our beagle/basset mix, Flash (to the tune of Mitch Miller’s Bicycle Built For Two) “FlashDog, FlashDog, give me your answer do, I’m half crazy all for the love of you”….and when I draw out the “oo” sounds he’ll howl right along!
To our border collie mix, Jack (to the tune of the Beach Boys Barbara Ann) “You got me rockin’ & a-rollin’, rockin’ and a-reelin’, Jack Dog, Jack Jack Jack Jack Jack Dog!” He looks at me like I’m crazy – he isnt a singer (yet)!
To our pit/lab mix, Harley (to the tune of Motley Crue’s Nona) “Harley, I’m outta my head over you”….he wriggles and gives lots of sloppy kisses!
My husband sings random radio songs to all of them, adapting the words….but he made up a song for Dixie (to the tune of Mockingbird) “Hush little Dixie, dont you yap, Daddy’s gonna cuddle & we’ll take a nap…”….she just sits in his arms & looks up at him adoringly while he sings, but barks when he’s done, demanding more!
Everyone I work with who has dogs sings to them….we all crack up sharing stories every day!

I am a vocal performance major, so I sing all the time. My 15 year old Italian Greyhound Jack doesn’t so much care, but Bella, our 11 month old puppy, just LOVES to sing! I can’t take her to the practice room with me like I had done with Jack in the past, because she ends up singing more than I do! As she’s gotten older, now she’ll wait to sing a song unless I sing her name in it, and the second she hears “Bella” she chimes right in! It’s so cute. She gets this look of intense concentration on her face, and she tries really hard. I think it’s adorable, and I sure hope our neighbors do, too. 🙂

Well, I have 7 babies (hazard of working at a vet’s office…lol) and we sing a version of “You are my Sunshine” except we replace “Sunshine” with each one’s name…like my 2 oldest ones (litter brothers) are now 11 1/2 years old (lab/chow mixes)…”You are my Bo, Bo…my only Bo, Bo…you make me happy…when skies are gray…you’ll never know dear…how much I love you…Please don’t take my Bo, Bo away”….and “You are my Jesse…my only Jesse…” etc. all the way through each one down to the youngest baby…and the youngest is a Min. Pin. who has his own theme song (because he looooves the Husky, Skylie)…”I like fuzzy butts…and I cannot lie…you other brothers can’t deny…” etc. They all seem to love singing…lol 🙂

How funny I sing to my miniature dachshund too.
Her name is Minnie Mouse so I sing the Mickey Club Song but I change M.i.c.k.e.y to
“M.i.n.n.i.e M.o.u.s.e, minnie mouse(what,what,what), minnie mouse (what,what,what), momma loves her minnie mouse”.
I too also sing “You are my sunshine” to her and I sing “My Girl” I think it is the Temptations who sig the real version of my girl.

I have a 3 year old great dane and a 10 month old lab/retriever/chow mix, they both are the center of my world and mean the most to me, but they have a big problem!!! They LOve to chew anything they can get their grubby little paws on, and it is driving me mad! I have had to replace numerous pairs of mine and my husband’s shoes as well as having to replace three of their very expensive very large dog beds!!! They chew right through the zipper and rumage through the fluff till it looks like a snow storm in my house!!! 🙂 I feel bad because all they have now in there crate is lots of blankets, but I don’t want to keep wasting money on these beds that they keep destroying!!! My question to you guys is……Does anyone know of an EXTRA LARGE dog bed that is indestructable to my dogs teeth? maybe someone has gone through this with there pups?
Please help me before my babies eat me out of house and home!!! HA!! 🙂

I am amazed at how many people sing “You Are My Sunshine” to their dogs. I sing it to my golden retriever Lucy on a regular basis, and it literally puts her to sleep. I substitute “sunshine” for “Lucy”. She is the sunshine in my life!

I also sing “You are my Sunshine” to our (adopted from my sister) terrier mix. Samson is about 13 lbs. he tries to sing along. But I do need a larger repertoire, so being here gives me some ideas.

This is great! I make up little songs and sing them to my dog all the time. She’s a little yorkie-poo, and I’m always singing about how small and pretty she is. My housemate thinks I’m a psychopath. 🙂

I sing too my dog any song but I usually alter the lyrics and make them about her or when I give her massages

Thank god I’m not crazy. My siberian gets “Pike the magic the husky lives wild n’ free, and frolics in the moring dew…..” As well as a hundred other little tunes and lymrics!
